John Biggs over at CrunchGear has been talking to the
zzzPhone guys for a story he was writing for the NYT, and in the process found out a few new facts about the handset. They also sent him some images of the final hardware, as opposed to the renders on their site. It turns out that the zzzPhone - which you can customise from a basic model up to a GPS, mobile TV and WiFi superphone - doesn't actually run Windows Mobile at all but, in John's opinion, some sort of Linux-based OS with Java compatibility.
Despite the enthusiasm of the commentors on our earlier post, I'm still not convinced by the zzzPhone. I've had hands-on time with too many crappy cellphones to be willing to part with cash - even just $149 in basic form - for something so untested.
